Buying Pi Coin: the routes that exist and the traps

Pi (PI) can be bought on a handful of exchanges, but not everywhere in Asia, and not every product called Pi is Pi. Here is how to tell the difference before you pay.

In short

  • Real PI is sold on exchanges that appear on Pi’s own KYB list, such as Kraken, OKX, Bitget, Gate and MEXC.
  • An “IOU” is a placeholder for future tokens. It is not the same thing as PI on Pi Mainnet.
  • Most major offshore exchanges exclude Hong Kong, Japan or Malaysia, and several exclude Thailand or Indonesia. Always read the live country list.
  • Price was around US$0.082 on 12 October 2026 (CoinMarketCap, CoinGecko), thin volume, far below the 2025 peak.

Real PI or a placeholder: settle this first

Pi Coin (PI) is the native token of Pi Network, which opened its Mainnet to the outside world on 20 February 2025. Before that date, Pi could not legally or technically be traded: the network was “enclosed”, and anything sold under the Pi name was a derivative. Exchanges offered pre-market contracts and “IOU” tokens, essentially a bet on what the real token would be worth once it existed. When the network opened, a few of those venues converted or closed their IOUs. HTX, for instance, delisted its Pi product on 13 February 2025 and paid holders out at 61.28 USDT per token, according to press reports.

Today the distinction still matters because the word “IOU” survives. CEX.IO’s own buy page says Pi Coin “is currently traded as an IOU, meaning it is a placeholder for future Pi Network tokens”. CoinMarketCap keeps a separate “Pi [IOU]” page that warns IOU prices may not be transferable across exchanges. Real PI, by contrast, is a token you can deposit to and withdraw from an exchange over the Pi blockchain, which OKX, MEXC and Kraken have each documented.

Pi’s own blog is blunt about who is allowed to touch the real thing. After launch it told users to be “extremely cautious” with any business that is not on its KYB-verified list, a page it says requires “proper licenses for businesses’ respective geolocations”. As of our check on 12 October 2026 that list names twelve businesses: Kraken, OKX, Bitget, Gate, Pionex, Onramp.money, Onramper, Zypto, LBank, TransFi, MEXC and Banxa. Binance, Bybit, Coinbase, HTX, Upbit, Bithumb and CEX.IO are not on it. If a seller or app says it offers “Pi Mainnet wallets” and is missing from that page, treat it as a red flag, a point we cover in our legitimacy guide.

The rest of this guide takes these in order. If you are comparing venues rather than routes, the exchanges overview has the listing table and individual reviews of OKX, Bitget, MEXC and Gate.

Buying PI spot on a listed exchange

This is the route that most closely matches what people mean by “buy Pi Coin”. An exchange lists a PI/USDT market (Kraken also quotes USD, EUR, GBP, CAD and ETH pairs), you hold dollars or a stablecoin, and you swap them for PI at the going price. Which venue to pick depends mostly on where you live, because the big offshore names exclude different countries and the lists change without notice.

OKX opened PI trading on 20 February 2025 and added a US launch on 5 May 2026. Bitget announced PI/USDT on 17 February 2025. MEXC and Gate also opened PI/USDT on 20 February 2025, and Kraken made PI tradable on 13 March 2026. Those dates come from each exchange’s announcement pages as researched on 12 October 2026. Kraken warns that geographic restrictions may apply, and Gate’s own announcement already said users in the UK and other restricted locations cannot access the product.

Identity checks are standard everywhere that matters. Bitget states plainly that without Level 1 verification a user is unable to deposit, trade or withdraw. OKX’s buying guide tells readers to complete KYC before buying. Kraken requires a verified Standard or Pro account for card purchases, with the card in the account holder’s name. MEXC’s current unverified-account limits are unclear from its pages, so do not count on skipping verification. All of this is exchange KYC, which is separate from the Pi app’s identity check described in our Pi KYC guide.

  1. Choose an exchange from Pi’s KYB list that serves your country, and read its live restricted-locations page before you register.
  2. Open an account with your real details and complete identity verification. Use two-factor authentication from day one.
  3. Fund it: card or bank transfer where offered (Kraken lists bank transfer, ACH, card and PayPal), P2P, or a USDT deposit from a wallet you already own.
  4. Open the PI market and place a limit order at a price you choose. A market order fills at whatever the thin book offers.
  5. Check the fill, then decide whether to leave PI on the exchange or withdraw it. Withdrawing to the Pi app needs Pi KYC and migration first, covered in our transfer guide.

What it really costs

Headline trading fees are modest, but they are only part of the bill. As of the dates shown on their fee pages, OKX’s Regular tier is 0.08 percent maker and 0.10 percent taker (from 14 August 2026), Bitget charges 0.1 percent both sides before discounts, Gate’s VIP 0 tier is 0.1 percent both sides on its EU fee page, and MEXC lists 0 percent maker and 0.05 percent taker. Kraken Pro starts at 0.40 percent maker and 0.80 percent taker at zero volume, and its Instant Buy adds a 1 percent fee plus spread. Card purchases anywhere add a payment-processor charge on top.

The spread, the gap between the best buy and sell prices, matters more than the fee when a market is thin. CoinMarketCap showed roughly US$2.9 million of 24-hour volume against a US$920 million market capitalisation on 12 October 2026, a small ratio. That is why we suggest limit orders and splitting larger buys. It is general practice, not advice tailored to you. Use the converter to sanity-check what a quote implies in your currency, and remember the live price moves minute to minute.

Country by country: what Asian buyers can use

The picture is uneven, and it is worth reading slowly. The table below summarises what each exchange’s own help pages say, plus what we could verify about local licensed venues. Absence from a restricted list is not an endorsement, and “not found” means we found no evidence, not that something is impossible.

MarketOffshore PI exchanges (their own pages)Local licensed route
Hong KongOKX, Bitget, MEXC and Gate all list Hong Kong as restricted or prohibitedNo PI listing found on SFC-licensed platforms
JapanOKX, Bitget, Gate and Kraken exclude Japan; MEXC is “limited” after FSA warningsPI is not handled by any of the 27 FSA-registered operators (1 Sept 2026)
South KoreaBitget does not list it as prohibited; Gate does; MEXC’s app is blocked in app storesNo PI listing found on Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone or Korbit
VietnamNone of OKX, Bitget, MEXC or Gate lists it as restrictedNo licensed exchange exists yet; police warned about Pi in 2025
IndonesiaGate lists it as restricted; OKX and Bitget do not mention itNo verified PI listing on OJK-licensed exchanges
ThailandBitget and Gate exclude it; Thai SEC announced a block on OKX in 2025 (reported)No PI listing found on SEC-licensed exchanges
MalaysiaOKX, Bitget, MEXC and Gate all exclude MalaysiaNo PI evidence on the five SC-registered exchanges

Two things sit behind this table. First, exchange terms and regulators can disagree: MEXC is not formally prohibited in Vietnam or Thailand on its own list, but it carries regulator warnings elsewhere, including an Investor Alert List entry from Securities Commission Malaysia in September 2022. Second, Vietnam is a special case on the legal side. The Hanoi City Police warned on 3 March 2025 that crypto including Pi is not recognised as property and that using it for payments could be penalised, and the licensed exchange regime is still at pilot stage. We summarise each market in the Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong pages, and the cross-market view in our regulation overview.

Using a VPN to get around an exclusion is not a clever workaround. Bitget’s terms prohibit it, and an account closed for a location mismatch can be hard to recover funds from. If your country is excluded, the honest options are narrower: a locally licensed exchange that does not list PI (which means no PI), a P2P purchase on a venue that does serve you, or waiting.

The IOU route and CEX.IO, stated plainly

Some readers reach us because they saw a “Buy Pi” button on a platform that is not on Pi’s list. CEX.IO is the main example. It has operated since 2013 and says on its own site that it holds “30+ licences and registrations”, is registered as a Money Services Business with FinCEN in the United States, and has passed Level 1 PCI DSS audits. Its UK financial promotion was approved by CEX.IO Markets UK Limited (FRN 1007192) on 3 August 2026. Those are company statements, so check them on the FCA register and FinCEN’s MSB search rather than taking our word or its word for it.

For Pi specifically, the same company labels its product “Pi [IOU]”. Instant Buy offers preset amounts of USD 300, 500 and 1,000 (or a custom amount), and the page lists Visa, Mastercard, SEPA, SWIFT, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and crypto deposits as payment methods. It is not on Pi’s KYB list, so you should not assume the balance can be withdrawn to a Pi Mainnet wallet, and a separate wallet page on the same site does not say whether the PI it holds is real or an IOU. Identity verification is required, and availability depends on your country. If you want price exposure rather than the actual token and you accept that, it is one route. If you want PI you can move into the Pi Wallet, use a listed exchange instead.

Want the IOU product? Read the rules firstPi is quoted as an IOU there, so check the withdrawal terms and your country's availability before you pay.

Buying from individuals

You will also see offers to sell you Pi directly, on social media, in Telegram groups or in app comments. Be very careful here. The Pi Core Team’s rule during the enclosed period was that Pi could not be exchanged at all, and anyone selling “presale” Pi or an unmigrated balance is selling something that does not exist. Even now, a stranger asking you to send money first and promising to transfer PI later fits a standard scam pattern.

If you use an exchange’s P2P market, which OKX describes as free of service fees and Bitget as zero-fee, stay inside the platform’s escrow, pay only from an account in your own name (Bitget requires the payment account name to match your verified name), and release nothing until funds have cleared. Reversible payments are the main risk. Vietnamese press reported frozen bank accounts for P2P sellers caught in scam investigations in June 2026. That is a consequence worth knowing about on the receiving side too.

A short safety checklist

After you buy, you can leave PI on the exchange (custodial) or move it into the Pi Wallet. That second step, and what the wallet options look like, is a separate decision. If you are asking “should I?” about the asset itself, start with what Pi Coin is and how much it was worth on 12 October 2026, then decide for yourself. Quick answers

Can I buy Pi Coin right now?

Yes, on exchanges that list PI spot. As of 12 October 2026 Kraken, OKX, Bitget, Gate and MEXC list PI spot and all appear on Pi's own KYB list. Availability depends on your country, and you must pass the exchange's ID check first.

What is a Pi IOU and is it real Pi?

An IOU is a placeholder, a promise of future tokens, not PI on Pi's Mainnet. CEX.IO's own page says Pi Coin is traded as an IOU, and CoinMarketCap lists a separate Pi [IOU] page. Do not assume an IOU can be withdrawn to Pi's wallet.

Is it safe to buy Pi Coin?

Buying on a regulated, KYB-listed exchange is safer than buying from strangers, but the asset itself is volatile and thinly traded. PI was about 97 percent below its all-time high on 12 October 2026. Only risk money you can afford to lose.

Can I buy Pi Coin in Japan, Hong Kong or Malaysia?

Not on locally licensed exchanges as far as we could verify. OKX, Bitget, MEXC and Gate list these markets among restricted locations on their own pages. Check each exchange's live restricted-country page before registering, and do not use a VPN.

Do I need KYC to buy Pi?

On the exchange, yes in practice: Bitget says users without Level 1 verification cannot deposit, trade or withdraw, and OKX's guide says to complete KYC first. Pi's separate in-app KYC is only needed if you want to move PI into the Pi Wallet.
