Buying Pi Coin in Indonesia: legal status, tax and exchanges

Indonesia now runs crypto through OJK and a published whitelist. See how that affects Pi Coin, what the 0.21% and 1% taxes mean in rupiah and which routes are realistic for residents and expats.

Pi Coin (PI) is the native token of Pi Network, and Indonesian Pioneer numbers are often quoted in the millions, though I found no source that backs the figure. The country’s rulebook changed a great deal between 2022, when Pi was called illegal, and 2025, when OJK took over crypto. This guide walks through that shift and then turns to numbers you can use: the tax in rupiah, the whitelist you can check yourself and the real state of PI on Indonesian exchanges.

Where Pi stands after the OJK takeover

Until early 2025 crypto in Indonesia sat with Bappebti, the commodity futures regulator. OJK (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan, the financial services authority) took over in January 2025, with POJK 27/2024 as the framework for digital financial assets and crypto, according to Infobanknews. The tradable asset list is set through the crypto exchange, CFX, rather than by ad hoc approvals. In practice the question for any coin becomes whether a licensed trader has listed it.

OJK is the place to verify. Its whitelist press release of 19 December 2025 names the licensed traders (PAKD) and registered prospective ones (CPAKD). The page would not load for me and I relied on search summaries for the counts, so use OJK’s own document as the authority. Press reports put the licensed count at 26 PAKD in May 2026, with Luno added; reports disagree on whether Luno is licensed or still in the process.

The 2022 Bappebti statement, and why it is not the whole story

On 10 November 2022 Indonesian outlets reported that the Trade Ministry and Bappebti said Pi Network was not registered with Bappebti and was therefore illegal; Deputy Trade Minister Jerry Sambuaga also said his name was used in Pi promotions without permission. I could read only headlines and snippets of the Bisnis.com report, so treat details as secondary. The context matters: Pi had not launched on open exchanges then, and Bappebti no longer supervises crypto.

That statement was not repeated by OJK or by Satgas PASTI, the anti-illegal-investment task force, in anything I found, and it does not say holding Pi you earned in the app is a crime. It does explain why Indonesian searches for “Pi Coin legal” still return alarming pages.

Is PI on Indodax, Pintu or Tokocrypto?

I could not verify a PI listing on any OJK-licensed exchange as of 12 October 2026. Indodax, Pintu, Tokocrypto, Upbit Indonesia and Reku are reported on the licensed list, and Luno is named in some summaries, but their asset lists were blocked or did not mention PI when I looked.

What I foundSource and dateWeight
Indodax “confirmed” a PI listingBittime blog, Feb 2025Unverified; no Indodax notice seen
Pintu gives a PI pricePintu articles, Aug 2025 and 11 Mar 2026Does not say PI is tradable there
TokocryptoNothing foundUnknown
Luno IndonesiaNine IDR pairs (ADA, ATOM, AVAX, BTC, DOT, ETH, POL, SOL, USDT)PI not among them

The rule of thumb: a price page is not a listing, and a blog saying “listed on 12 exchanges” is not an exchange announcement. If you see PI in a rupiah market in an app, treat it as real only when the exchange’s own asset list, with ticker and network, says so. For Pi’s side of this, none of the local names is on Pi’s KYB list, so deposits from the Pi mainnet are not guaranteed to be supported even if a listing appears.

Tax maths under PMK 50/2025

The tax is the clearest rule you can apply. PMK 50/2025, effective 1 August 2025, treats crypto trading like securities for tax purposes: no VAT on the trade and a final income tax on the transaction value, not the profit. The explanation on the DGT page gives 0.21% on licensed domestic platforms, withheld by the platform, and 1% on foreign platforms, which you pay yourself if the platform does not collect it.

Sale valueLicensed Indonesian platform (0.21%)Foreign platform (1%)
Rp 1,000,000Rp 2,100Rp 10,000
Rp 10,000,000Rp 21,000Rp 100,000
Rp 100,000,000Rp 210,000Rp 1,000,000

Because the tax applies to value, not profit, a losing sale still carries it. That makes frequent small trades on a foreign platform costlier than they look. I could not find guidance on app-mined PI, so ask a tax adviser how to treat balances you migrated from the Pi app. Keep dated records either way.

Satgas PASTI and the offshore question

Satgas PASTI halted 228 unlicensed crypto traders between January and May 2026, and the list reported by Infobanknews on 23 June 2026 includes Binance, KuCoin, Coinbase, Bybit, OKX, Bithumb Korea, Gate, Bitstamp and Gemini. Gate’s own restricted-locations page also lists Indonesia, and MEXC’s app is not listed in Indonesia, per its guide. Bitget’s terms do not name Indonesia. These are the four platforms where PI trades, so the offshore route is the one that least fits Indonesian rules, and the one most exposed to blocking. Read the platform reviews for OKX and Bitget before you decide.

Licensed local route
  • Tax withheld at 0.21%; supervised by OJK.
  • Rupiah in and out, with local bank and e-wallet rails.
  • Customer asset rules apply.
Where it falls short
  • PI not verified on any licensed exchange.
  • Pi’s KYB list does not include these exchanges.
  • You can only trade what is listed.

Listing claims you will see on social media

Indonesian crypto Telegram groups and TikTok clips repeat three claims about Pi. The first is “PI is already listed in Indonesia”, usually sourced to the February 2025 list of twelve international exchanges that included a mention of Indodax; as covered above, I could not find an Indodax announcement. The second is that “Pi is legal now because OJK exists”, which confuses the regulator changing with a decision about Pi. The third is that “Pi is illegal”, usually sourced to the 2022 Bappebti statement, which is now more than four years old and was issued by a body that no longer supervises crypto. None of the three is a verified current position. The way to test any of them is to look for an OJK whitelist entry, an exchange asset list that shows PI with a ticker and the exchange’s own announcement.

Two other details help you calibrate. First, the last licence I saw under the former Bappebti pipeline was issued to PT Gudang Kripto Indonesia on 22 September 2026, per a search summary I could not verify, which tells you that new licences are still being issued and the whitelist keeps changing. Second, the sole crypto bourse is CFX, so what Indonesian exchanges can list also depends on what CFX’s crypto asset list contains. Both facts mean you should check again before every deposit rather than rely on a snapshot, including this one.

Rupiah in, rupiah out

Local exchanges accept bank transfers, and QRIS and e-wallet payments are common in Indonesia, though I did not verify which each exchange supports. P2P on offshore platforms is the usual way Indonesians reach foreign exchanges: Bitget’s P2P page mentions QRIS, DANA and OVO and requires the payment account name to match your verified name. That list is a vendor claim and may be out of date. The selling guide explains P2P risks, including payment reversal.

Foreign residents in Indonesia

If you live in Indonesia on a stay permit rather than as a citizen, the tax rules in PMK 50/2025 are framed around the platform and the transaction, not your nationality, but how a foreign resident files is a separate question for a local adviser. Licensed exchanges will ask for identity documents, and many ask for a local bank account in your name; expats should ask each exchange which documents it accepts for foreigners before funding anything. For international card and bank routes that bypass Indonesian platforms, remember that the 1% foreign-platform rate and the Satgas PASTI warnings apply to residents wherever the platform is based.

Pi KYC and the KIA note

Pi’s 17 September 2026 update on KYC and mainnet migration lists a change relevant here: the Indonesian KIA identity card is no longer valid for KYC. If your KYC failed after a document change, check the KYC guide and the Pi post, and never pay anyone for a “fast-track”, which Pi says is a scam pattern.

A step-by-step plan for today

  1. Decide whether you want PI exposure in rupiah at all; holding in the Pi app costs nothing.
  2. Complete Pi KYC and migration so PI is movable.
  3. Check OJK’s whitelist for any local exchange and its asset list for PI before depositing rupiah.
  4. If you use a foreign platform anyway, budget the 1% tax and test with a small amount; read how to buy Pi Coin.
  5. Save records for each conversion.

Another product that appears in searches is CEX.IO’s Pi [IOU], which its own page calls a placeholder for future Pi Network tokens; CEX.IO is not on Pi’s KYB list (checked 12 October 2026), requires ID verification and does not say whether Indonesia is served, so it is not a PI withdrawal route.

Quick answers

Is Pi Coin legal in Indonesia?

Holding is not banned, but in November 2022 the Trade Ministry and Bappebti said Pi Network was not registered with Bappebti and was therefore illegal to trade, per Indonesian press. Crypto supervision moved to OJK in January 2025, and I found no newer OJK or Satgas PASTI statement naming Pi.

Can I buy Pi Coin on Indodax, Pintu or Tokocrypto?

I could not verify a PI listing on any OJK-licensed exchange. A February 2025 blog said Indodax confirmed a listing, but I saw no Indodax announcement, and Pintu's 2025 and 2026 price articles do not say PI is tradable there. Check the exchange's asset list in the app.

How much tax do I pay on crypto in Indonesia?

Under PMK 50/2025 (effective 1 August 2025) final income tax is 0.21% of transaction value on licensed domestic platforms and 1% on foreign platforms, with no VAT on trades. On Rp 10,000,000 that is Rp 21,000 or Rp 100,000. Confirm with a tax professional.

Is it safe to use OKX or Gate from Indonesia?

Not from a regulatory standpoint. Satgas PASTI halted 228 unlicensed crypto traders between January and May 2026, and a list reported by Infobanknews includes OKX and Gate. Gate also lists Indonesia as a restricted location. Account and withdrawal risk sits with you.

Does Pi KYC accept Indonesian ID cards?

Pi's 17 September 2026 update said the Indonesian KIA (children's identity card) is no longer valid for KYC. Adults normally use the national e-KTP or a passport; follow the instructions inside the Pi KYC app and never pay anyone to speed it up.
