MEXC and Pi Coin: cheap to trade, hard to vouch for

MEXC has the lowest published PI spot fee of the four big venues and is on Pi's KYB list. It also has no verified licence and several regulator warnings. Read both sides.

PI / USD
PI

MEXC is the exchange people mention when they want the cheapest PI trade and do not mind a more adventurous venue. It is genuinely on Pi’s KYB list, which makes it one of only a dozen businesses that Pi Network itself recognises. It is also one of the least regulated names among the four exchanges this site reviews. Both statements are true, and a sensible reader keeps them side by side.

The listing record

MEXC’s announcement placed PI in its Innovation Zone, a section for newer and higher-risk tokens. Trading opened on 20 February 2025 at 08:00 UTC, and PI/USDT fees were zero for the first 30 days, to 22 March 2025. Deposits and withdrawals followed on 22 February 2025, with a link to Pi’s own block explorer (the page does not name the network). Before that, MEXC ran a pre-market product: MEXC’s pre-market PI trading, per its announcement title and dates, began on 19 February 2025 and ended the next morning, with settlement from 21 February. We could not open that page, so treat the detail as unverified. It matters because pre-market trading was an IOU-style product; the settlement path is explained on the exchange hub.

Search listings also show PI/USDC and PI/USD1 pairs; we could not date them, so treat them as unconfirmed.

MEXC uses the Innovation Zone for newer and higher-risk listings, and PI was placed there at launch. The label is a risk signal from the exchange itself, not a technical category. It does not tell you whether PI is withdrawable to Pi Mainnet, which MEXC addressed separately in its deposit and withdrawal announcement of 22 February 2025, and it does not tell you whether a given country may use the market.

What MEXC charges

MEXC’s fee guide, dated 21 September 2026, says “0% for makers and 0.05% for takers”, with a 50 per cent discount to 0.025 per cent for takers who hold 500 or more MX tokens for 24 hours. Against the other three exchanges in this series that is the lowest published base rate: OKX’s Regular tier is 0.08 and 0.10 per cent, Bitget’s 0.1 per cent both ways, and Gate’s VIP 0 rate on its EU page also 0.1 per cent both ways. The saving is real only if you can trade at all; a thin PI book can cost far more in slippage than any fee schedule. See the price guide for how wide spreads can be.

On a US$1,000 taker order, 0.05 per cent costs US$0.50, the discounted 0.025 per cent costs US$0.25, and OKX’s Regular-tier 0.10 per cent costs US$1.00. The gaps are small in absolute terms. In a market that moves several per cent in a day and trades only a few million dollars across all venues, spread and slippage dominate, which is why a limit order matters more than the choice of fee tier. The zero-fee launch window for PI/USDT ended on 22 March 2025, so do not treat any older promotional wording as current.

We have not read those notices and do not rely on them; check the regulators’ own sites. For the wider pattern, see is Pi Coin legit and the regional regulation overview.

Country by country

MEXC’s country guide says its User Agreement prohibits users from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, mainland China, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, among others. For the seven Asian markets in this site’s scope:

Hong Kong and Malaysia are prohibited. Japan is not prohibited but is described as limited, with the two FSA letters above, and the Japan FSA register of 27 operators shows no PI; see the Japan guide. South Korea is limited: the Korean app-store blocks make the service hard to reach, and Korean won-market exchanges are the lawful local route; see the Korea guide. Indonesia is limited and the app is not in local stores; see the Indonesia guide. Vietnam and Thailand are not addressed on the country guide, so treat them as unknown, not open.

Whichever country you are in, MEXC says its User Agreement prevails over the summary guide.

KYC and limits: what we could not confirm

MEXC has long advertised trading without full verification. An older announcement listed daily withdrawal limits of 10 BTC for unverified accounts, 80 BTC for Primary and 200 BTC for Advanced. The current FAQ shows only Primary and Advanced, so we do not know whether an unverified PI trader can still withdraw. Read the limits shown inside your own account. Verification also reduces one risk: an account that has never been verified is the easiest to freeze when a compliance review arrives.

Who MEXC suits, and who should skip it

It suits an experienced reader outside the prohibited list who wants a low taker fee, understands the Innovation Zone label, and will keep only trading balances on the exchange. It does not suit anyone who needs a regulator to stand behind the platform, anyone living in Hong Kong, Malaysia or Singapore, and anyone in Japan or Korea where local regulators have already objected.

Questions to ask before you fund an account

Three checks take a few minutes and cost nothing. First, search the regulator’s own site in your country for the name MEXC, not a news article about it, and see whether it appears on a warning or investor-alert list. Second, read the User Agreement clause on prohibited jurisdictions, because the summary guide defers to it. Third, decide in advance how much you are willing to leave on the platform: a trading balance you can lose is a very different thing from savings. None of these steps requires you to trust our summary, which is the point.

Buying PI on MEXC

Register on the web or the app, but only from a non-prohibited country, and complete whatever verification your account screen asks for. Fund the account with USDT, since PI/USDT is the market we confirmed. Open PI/USDT and use a limit order: with 0 per cent maker, resting orders cost nothing in fees. Withdrawals to the Pi Wallet need Pi KYC and migration first; the transfer guide covers the address and memo checks, and MEXC’s own announcement names no network, so test with a small amount. The buying guide compares this route with other exchanges and with IOU products.

Prefer an alternative route?Availability depends on your country and ID verification, and the product is an IOU.

CEX.IO is the IOU-style alternative we mention on the exchange hub; it is not on Pi’s KYB list and nothing bought as an IOU should be assumed withdrawable. For a venue with the opposite profile, a long published licence list and a long Asian restriction list, see the Gate review.

Quick answers

Is Pi Coin listed on MEXC?

Yes. MEXC listed PI/USDT in its Innovation Zone with trading from 20 February 2025 at 08:00 UTC, and enabled PI deposits and withdrawals on 22 February 2025. MEXC also appears on Pi Network's KYB list as checked on 12 October 2026.

What are MEXC's spot fees?

[MEXC's fee guide](https://www.mexc.com/learn/article/mexc-spot-trading-fees-maker-taker-rates-calculator/1), dated 21 September 2026, states 0% for makers and 0.05% for takers. Holding 500 or more MX tokens for 24 hours halves the taker fee to 0.025%. PI/USDT carried zero fees for its first 30 days after listing, ending 22 March 2025.

Is MEXC licensed or regulated?

We found no licence in MEXC's primary sources. MEXC's own country guide says the Securities Commission Malaysia added MEXC Global to its Investor Alert List on 5 September 2022, and that Japan's FSA sent warning letters in 2023 and 2024. Check the regulators' registers yourself.

Can I use MEXC in Japan, Korea or Indonesia?

MEXC does not formally prohibit them but calls access limited. Its guide says Japan's FSA issued warning letters, Korean regulators had MEXC's app removed from Google Play (March 2025) and the App Store (April 2025), and the app is not listed in Indonesia.

Does MEXC require KYC to trade PI?

We could not confirm. An older MEXC announcement listed withdrawal limits for unverified accounts, while its current FAQ shows only Primary and Advanced levels. Which rule applies to PI today is unverified, so read the verification page inside your account.
