In short
- An unlock is the end of a lockup, after which coins can move; it is not a new coin being created.
- Pi has no official unlock calendar. Totals come from trackers and secondary reports and can conflict.
- Reported monthly amounts in 2026 range from about 100 million to over 230 million PI; August to October have no verified figure.
- One estimate puts about 775.8 million PI unlocking by the end of 2026; another puts the whole year near 1.2 billion.
What an “unlock” means for PI
Pi Coin (PI) is the native token of Pi Network, and most coins that exist today began as balances in the mining app. A Pioneer who completes KYC and migrates to Mainnet can choose to lock part of that balance, either before migration in the mining app or afterwards in Pi Wallet. The locks are irreversible and tie a share of the coins up for a chosen term, in return for a higher mining rate or other rewards. Pi’s lockup guide and its on-chain lockup post describe both types, and the whitepaper sets multipliers for terms from two weeks to three years.
An unlock is what happens when that term ends. The coins do not get created at that moment; they already existed in a locked state. What changes is that they become available to move, sell or lock again. Core Team tokens work the same way in principle: the whitepaper says the team’s 20% unlocks at the same pace as community mining, with a possible additional self-imposed lockup. This is why “unlock” in the PI context is more like thousands of small personal calendars than one scheduled event of the kind seen with venture-funded tokens. For how those coins feed into the headline numbers, see the supply guide.
Why there is no official calendar
Pi’s official pages describe the mechanism but not a master schedule, and we found no monthly unlock calendar on minepi.com as of 12 October 2026. Third parties reconstruct totals by reading on-chain data, mostly through PiScan, adding up claimable balances. That has two consequences. The numbers are estimates, and they change as more users complete KYC and migrate, because a newly migrated lockup adds a future expiry date that did not exist yesterday.
Expect disagreement. One crypto.news analysis from June 2026 projected about 1.21 billion PI over the year, around 6.5 million a day, without naming a data source. PiScan-based coverage in July put the remaining total for 2026 at about 775.8 million. These are different snapshots, possibly different methods, and they should not be averaged.
What has been reported so far in 2026
The table lists amounts as reported in the press and on analytics sites. None of them is from Pi, and we could not open PiScan’s own data directly, so treat every row as secondary and check it against the tracker before you rely on it.
| Period (2026) | Reported unlock | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| January | about 139 million PI | Biggest planned unlock of the month per one summary; another cites 134 million |
| February | about 171 million PI | Secondary report |
| March | single-day peak near 21 million PI | Largest single day, on 7 March |
| April | about 231-240 million PI | A guide said 231 million; a 30-day forecast said 239.5 million, peak 22.78 million on 16 April |
| June | over 163 million PI | About 16 million on 11 June |
| July | 103.7 million PI | Whale Alert, 10 July 2026 |
Then there are the forward-looking snapshots. At the end of July, Edgen relayed PiScan figures showing 127.5 million PI (about US$10.5 million at the time) due over the next 30 days, an average of about 4.25 million a day, and roughly 775.8 million more by the end of 2026. The same coverage mentioned a locked total of 6.17 billion. May, August, September and October 2026 have no verified monthly figure in our sources, so we leave them blank rather than guess. If you see a confident October number, ask where it came from.
Why the timing matters for price
The reason people watch unlocks is simple supply and demand. With the circulating supply near 11.24 billion on 12 October 2026, an average release of 4.25 million PI a day would add about 0.04% to supply each day. At a price near US$0.082, that average day is worth about US$0.35 million, and compared with CoinGecko’s 24-hour volume of roughly US$2.8 million it is about an eighth of a typical day’s trading. That is not enormous, but it is not trivial either, and the biggest daily spikes in the table are several times the average.
An unlock does not force a sale. A holder can re-lock, keep, spend or sell, and many do not sell at once. One analyst quoted in coverage of the July unlocks also pointed out that a higher price raises the dollar value of upcoming unlocks, which could encourage more selling when the price rises. The crypto.news analysis reached the sober conclusion that supply currently outweighs demand. None of this predicts a day’s move, and we do not make price calls here; for scenarios that include supply, see the prediction guide, and for the current quote see the price page.
Unlocks versus other things that add supply
People often blur unlocks with other events, so it is worth separating them. A migration moves a verified balance from the app to Mainnet, followed by a 14-day pending period described in Pi’s two-factor authentication post. A KYC pass makes a balance eligible to migrate but does not move it. A protocol upgrade, such as the Protocol 28 activation reported for 16 October 2026, changes node software and does not release a single coin. The KYC guide and the transfer guide walk through the first two, and the news timeline covers upgrades.
How to track unlocks yourself
The approach is the same every month and takes a few minutes.
- In Pi Wallet, open Lockups to see the amounts and dates of your own locks, and note which expire in the next 30 days.
- Open a tracker such as PiScan and read the upcoming-unlock view, noting its date, the total and the largest single day.
- Compare the tracker’s figure with a second source. If they differ by more than a few percent, find out whether one is counting a different measure.
- Check circulating supply on CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap again after the period to see how much actually moved into the count.
- Look at volume and price on the largest unlock days to see whether supply was absorbed.
Because the schedule changes as balances become claimable, a one-off check goes stale quickly. We list a date on every figure on this site for that reason, and we would rather leave a month blank than fill it with a number we cannot source.
Reading new unlock headlines
When the next headline about a “record unlock” appears, a few questions sort signal from noise. Is the number a monthly total, a 30-day rolling window or the largest single day? Does it come from PiScan directly or from an article that quotes an article? Does it include Core Team allocations, which some coverage folds into the same total? And is the amount compared with market volume and circulating supply, or only converted to dollars to look large? Most unlock stories fail at least one of those tests. We will add verified August to October figures here once a dated, checkable source exists.
If you hold PI and an unlock is coming
Your own unlock date is a personal planning item, not a market signal. Decide in advance whether you want to keep the coins locked, move them, or sell, and know that selling needs a route: a verified Pi account, a Mainnet wallet and an exchange that serves your country. The sell guide lays out those routes and the risks of the common scams, such as fake migration emails.
Finally, remember this guide does not give investment advice. If you want to see how changes in supply have fed into the market so far, the supply guide is the place to continue, and the prediction page shows the arithmetic behind price scenarios.
Quick answers
Is there an official Pi Coin unlock schedule?
No. Pi Network has not published a monthly unlock calendar that we could find as of 12 October 2026. Unlocks happen per wallet when a lockup ends, and third-party trackers such as PiScan estimate the totals, so published schedules are estimates.
How many Pi Coins unlock each month?
Reported amounts in 2026 have ranged from roughly 100 million to over 230 million PI a month, per secondary sources, for example 103.7 million in July. We found no verified figure for August, September or October 2026. Always check the tracker's date.
Do unlocks make the Pi Coin price fall?
Not automatically. An unlock makes coins available to move or sell, and the effect depends on whether holders sell, re-lock or wait. With thin daily volume, a large release into weak demand can add pressure, which is the common concern among analysts.
What is the difference between an unlock and a migration?
A migration moves a verified balance from the mining app to Mainnet and is followed by a 14-day pending period. An unlock is the end of a lockup on coins you already hold. Both can add to circulating supply but they are separate events.
Where can I see how many PI unlock in my own wallet?
In Pi Wallet, open Lockups to see the terms you set. For network-wide estimates, check a tracker such as PiScan or the Pi Blockexplorer, and remember they derive claimable balances rather than publish an official calendar.
