What you can really use Pi Coin for today

Pi Browser apps, local sellers, developer tools and an identity business exist. Big-brand acceptance and DeFi mostly do not, yet. Here is a sourced map of what works, what is testing and what is myth.

In short

  • Real use today is mostly inside Pi’s own ecosystem: Pi Browser apps, Map of Pi sellers, developer tools.
  • Pi’s DEX, Launchpad and smart contracts were testnet features at the last official update (Pi Day 2026).
  • No verified evidence that large retailers or carmakers accept Pi.
  • The identity business (PiVerify, Pi Sign-in) is Pi’s main outward-facing bet.

A coin is only as useful as the places that take it. Pi’s selling point is that tens of millions of people own the app, so a network of buyers and sellers should be easy to build. The reality in October 2026 is more modest, and unevenly documented. This page separates what you can actually do from what is being tested and what is hype. Related background lives on what Pi Coin is and in the news timeline.

Pi Browser and the app ecosystem

The centre of Pi’s ecosystem is Pi Browser, a custom browser that runs apps built for Pi and holds the Pi Wallet. According to Pi’s materials, ecosystem apps are listed through the Ecosystem Interface and carry a “Mainnet” (M) or “Testnet” (T) badge, so the first habit to build is checking which one an app is. A “T” app uses test coins with no value. An “M” app can handle real Pi.

How much activity runs through those apps is hard to verify. Pi has said that Pi App Studio, its AI app builder, had by the end of 2025 produced 13,400 chatbot apps and 24,400 custom apps from more than 51,800 creators; those numbers are self-reported. In March 2026 Pi said that Mainnet apps built in App Studio with live payments had begun, with four apps invited first. On 17 August 2026 Pi announced that App Studio creation and edit prices would track real AI costs from 24 August, with subsidies kept only for apps with real users, after a previous price of 0.25 Pi per creation or edit. In other words, Pi is moving from cheap subsidised app creation toward charging closer to cost, and favouring apps that have real users.

Pi also runs a hackathon (215+ mainnet submissions in 2025), the SoloHost beta for local AI apps on Pi Desktop (about 110 community apps), and a staking feature in the Ecosystem Directory. On 4 September 2026 it added local storage, a staking data API, a file-sharing function and a documentation site for developers. None of this tells you whether apps have lasting users, but it does show that something is being built.

Spending Pi in the real world

Pi’s flagship “real world” feature is the Map of Pi, a directory where merchants list what they accept Pi for. The Pi Day 2025 post reported 49,000 active sellers and “tens of thousands of merchants”, and a 2024 event post cited more than 27,000 active sellers; both are the project’s own figures. We found no independent audit of transaction counts, payment volumes or what currency sellers actually price in.

Independent reporting points in a consistent direction. Cointelegraph, as reposted by TradingView in 2025, described Pi being spent mostly inside peer-to-peer communities and verified Pi apps, with merchant adoption slow. That fits what the evidence shows: a community economy of small sellers, services and digital goods rather than mainstream retail.

Another myth: “Raspberry Pi coin acceptors”. These are unrelated gadgets built around a small computer, and have nothing to do with Pi Network.

Where Pi payments are allowed depends on the country. Hanoi City Police warned on 3 March 2025 that using Pi for payments in Vietnam could bring fines or criminal liability, pointing to State Bank rules that crypto is not a lawful payment method (text via a repost). Other Asian markets have no Pi-specific rule, but most regulate crypto as an investment or asset rather than as money. If you accept Pi as a seller, tax and reporting rules still apply; see the regulation overview and speak to a tax professional.

On 8 October 2026 Pi published a post on stablecoins. It says it will work with Open Standard on OUSD to explore rewards for Pioneers and wider ecosystem utility, that Pi “remains the primary crypto”, and that the work is at the stage of establishing principles; it gave no launch dates. This is a plan, not a product.

DeFi, tokens and smart contracts

The ambitious part of Pi’s roadmap is a full on-chain economy: a DEX, automated market maker (AMM), token launches and smart contracts. The picture as of Pi’s latest official statements is “testing, not live”. Pi announced the DEX, AMM and token creation on the testnet on 30 September 2025, a Launchpad on testnet at Pi Day 2026, a testnet RPC server on 8 April 2026 and a subscription smart contract on testnet on 17 April 2026. Pi’s stated process for contracts is external audit, then community review, then testnet, then mainnet. Protocol upgrades keep arriving (for example v25 on 22 July 2026 with ZK-friendly cryptography, reported by a news outlet), but Pi has not confirmed a mainnet DEX in the posts we could open.

Identity: PiVerify and Pi Sign-in

The most commercial of Pi’s recent ideas is identity as a service. At Pi2Day on 28 June 2026 Pi presented PiVerify, a KYC-as-a-service product paid for in Pi, and Pi Sign-in, a log-in that third-party apps can use. The pitch is that Pi has tens of millions of already-verified identities, and that businesses will pay to check them. This is explained by the founders at the Consensus conference in May 2026 as a main direction, though we have no sales or adoption figures. Pi’s own count was about 18 million verified Pioneers in June 2026 (see the KYC guide), a sizeable base if the business takes off.

Related is Pi Network Ventures, a US$100 million fund announced on 14 May 2025, funded from the 10 % ecosystem allocation and reported by Cointelegraph. Its first investment was OpenMind (29 October 2025), followed by CiDi Games. Pi also ran a .pi domain auction from 14 March to 28 June 2025, with a fee of 0.01 Pi per bid action.

How to try Pi safely

If you want to test the ecosystem rather than just read about it, start with a small amount. Make sure you only use apps with the Mainnet badge for real transactions, and pay only through Pi Wallet prompts you initiate yourself. Be wary of “payment request” scams, in which someone sends you a request to approve a transfer for something you did not buy. Pi’s warnings about fake wallets and impersonation also apply here; the wallet guide has a security checklist and the legitimacy page lists common traps.

Questions to ask before you accept or spend Pi

Whether you are a seller considering Pi or a Pioneer thinking about paying with it, four questions keep you grounded. First, which Pi is this: a Mainnet app handling migrated PI, or a Testnet app with test coins? Second, what is the price reference, and who bears the risk that PI moves between agreeing a price and settling it? With a market this thin, even small orders can move quotes. Third, is the arrangement lawful where you are, including tax? Fourth, can you recover from a mistake? On a blockchain, a payment sent to the wrong address cannot be reversed, and Pi’s non-custodial wallet means nobody can restore a lost passphrase.

What would change the picture

Three developments would give a clearer verdict. A mainnet release of the DEX and Launchpad would show whether the ecosystem can run without testnet scaffolding. Published, audited merchant payment data would show whether people spend Pi rather than hoard it. Regulator clarity in key markets would show whether the project can operate in the open. Until then, the fair summary is that the ecosystem is real but small, the story told about it is larger than the evidence, and holding Pi because of its “utility” is a bet on the future rather than a response to the present. To see how price has responded, see the price page, and for what you can do to get Pi in the first place, how to buy PI.

Quick answers

What can you buy with Pi Coin?

Inside Pi Browser you can pay for goods and services in apps and with sellers listed on the Map of Pi. Pi reported 49,000 active Map of Pi sellers in March 2025 (self-reported). Independent evidence of wide merchant acceptance, or of large payment volumes, has not been published.

Does Amazon or Toyota accept Pi Coin?

We found no evidence from the companies or from Pi that Amazon, Toyota, Honda, BYD or Bank of America accept Pi. Such claims circulate in viral posts. Treat any 'now accepted by' headline as unverified until the company confirms it in its own statement.

What is Pi Browser used for?

Pi Browser is the app where Pi's ecosystem apps run. Apps carry a Mainnet or Testnet badge via the Ecosystem Interface, and the Pi Wallet sits inside the browser. It is the place to try Pi-integrated apps, games, and marketplaces, and to check which ones accept real payments.

Can you use Pi for DeFi, DEX or smart contracts?

Not on mainnet, as far as Pi has said. Its Pi Day 2026 post listed the Launchpad and Pi DEX as testnet features, and smart contracts, including a subscription contract (17 April 2026), were being tested. Check Pi's blog for any mainnet release before relying on them.

Is Pi Coin accepted in my country?

Acceptance is local and informal, mainly through the Pi community, and rules differ by market. Hanoi police warned in March 2025 against paying with Pi in Vietnam. Check your country's page and the regulator before accepting or spending PI for anything significant.
