Pi KYC verification: how it works and what to do when it stalls

Everything Pioneers ask about Pi's identity check: the steps, how long it can take, the fixes Pi announced through September 2026, and the scams that prey on people stuck in the queue.

Exchanges run their own ID checks, separate from Pi KYC.

In short

  • KYC (know your customer) is the identity check that gates moving mined Pi onto the mainnet.
  • It runs only inside the Pi app; AI and human validators review it. There is no official paid or “fast” route.
  • Pi reported about 18 million verified Pioneers by 28 June 2026 (self-reported).
  • Most 2026 stalls trace to duplicate flags, liveness checks and gas-fee gaps; Pi posted fixes on 17 September 2026.

For most Pioneers, KYC is the gate between a balance in a phone app and a coin they can actually move. Pi’s FAQ is explicit that unverified, unmigrated Pi in the mining app is not transferable, so everything downstream (the migration steps, sending to an exchange, selling) starts here. This page covers what the process looks like, what has gone wrong for people, and where Pi’s own numbers stand.

What KYC is and why Pi requires it

Pi uses KYC to establish that each account belongs to one real person. That matters for the network’s model: mining rewards, Security Circles and referrals all assume one person per account. Pi’s white paper also ties KYC to compliance, since only KYC-verified Pioneers can move balance to the mainnet. The white paper describes a six-month grace window to complete it, a period that started on 1 July 2024 and was extended several times (to 30 November and 31 December 2024, then 31 January, 28 February and finally 14 March 2025, per Pi’s blog).

One point of clarity: “KYC lockup” is not an official Pi lockup type. Pi’s real lockups are chosen by the user and covered on the unlock page. KYC is simply the gate.

How the process works

Applications happen in the Pi KYC app inside the Pi ecosystem. According to Pi’s KYC validator post, every application is checked in about 20 validation tasks, and each task needs at least two validators, covering liveness, the identity document, photo match, data match and name. AI handles part of the load. The whitepaper says new accounts may apply only after 30 days. A Fast-Track option can create a mainnet wallet directly in the app; Pi removed the third-party Banxa option from the in-app mainnet wallet flow in July 2026.

  1. Open the Pi app and confirm you meet the account-age and eligibility conditions in the mining app’s KYC section.
  2. Start KYC from inside the app only, choose your document (a government ID Pi supports in your country) and complete the liveness selfie.
  3. Wait for AI and validator review. Do not resubmit repeatedly unless the app asks you to.
  4. When status shows verified, open the Mainnet Checklist, create or confirm your Pi Wallet and write the passphrase down offline.
  5. Set up two-factor authentication through a trusted email (Pi requires a liveness check for this too), then join the migration queue.
  6. After migration, your balance sits in a 14-day pending period before arriving in your mainnet wallet.

That last step is easy to miss. Pi’s 2FA post says migrated Pi is frozen for 14 days and that without 2FA the balance returns to the mining app. Migration is irreversible, so be sure of your wallet before you confirm.

Numbers Pi has published

Verification counts move around, partly because Pi counts “tentatively” verified accounts and fully verified accounts differently. The table gathers the official figures, with the date and the source.

DateVerified (KYC)Migrated
19 Dec 2024over 18 million (incl. tentative)over 8 million
End of 202517.5 million passed15.8 million
5 Mar 2026 snapshotabout 18 million16,568,774
28 Jun 2026over 18 millionnot stated

The April 2026 monthly update reportedly gave more than 18.1 million verified and 16.72 million migrated, with roughly 1.38 million verified but not yet migrated (secondary report quoting Pi Core Team on X, not opened by us). We did not find an official count newer than June 2026. All of these are Pi’s own, unaudited figures.

Behind the scenes, Pi’s validator programme paid its first round of rewards. The post counts 1,094,680 validators who completed 526,970,631 successful validations, rewarded at 0.0504179 Pi per validation from a pool funded by 1 Pi per migrating Pioneer plus 10 million Pi from the Pi Foundation. If you ever wondered why human review is slower than a purely automatic one, those numbers hint at the scale.

Common problems and official fixes

The most recent consolidated update is Pi’s blog post of 17 September 2026. It reports several things worth knowing if you are stuck:

  • Accounts flagged as duplicates were reviewed, and more than 417,000 can now proceed.
  • Fast-Track wallets without Pi for the gas fee could not claim their migration balance; Pi promised a fix within a week for about 497,000 Pioneers. We could not confirm completion.
  • Users of the Yoti verification path can resubmit.
  • Liveness checks were relaxed for older phones.
  • A palm-print trial is running, following a beta announced on 30 January 2026.
  • Indonesia’s KIA identity card is no longer accepted.

Earlier moves matter for context. On 23 October 2025 Pi said system checks let more than 3.36 million “tentative” users fully pass, with about 3 million more needing additional liveness checks. On 30 January 2026 it unblocked around 2.5 million Pioneers for migration and made more than 700,000 previously ineligible members able to apply.

Second migrations and referral bonuses

Migration is not a single event. Pi began “second migrations” after Pi Day 2026, so that Pioneers whose Security Circle members and referrals had since passed KYC could move the extra balance those members unlocked. Pi’s post says more than 119,000 second migrations had been completed by 26 March 2026, and that referral bonuses count only for referrals who have passed KYC. In late 2024 Pi stated a capacity of around 200,000 migrations per day. The practical lesson is that your transferable balance can grow after your own verification, so if you migrated a long time ago it is worth checking the app’s migration screen again.

Keep in mind that balance migrated under a pre-migration lockup stays locked for its term, and that lockups are irreversible; see the lockup section on our mining page and the unlock page for how those releases are reported.

Staying safe while you wait

Waiting for review makes people vulnerable, and scammers know it. Common traps include “KYC agents” selling faster approval, fake Pi Support accounts in chat groups, and emails claiming your migration needs a fee. Pi says it emails from a single official address (see its 2FA post) and that winners of its campaigns are contacted only by official email. KYC itself starts only inside the app; Pi’s wiki treats paid or unofficial KYC groups as scams (our source for the wiki is a search summary, so check it yourself).

Your identity documents are sensitive. Pi processes passports and selfies centrally with AI and human validators, which critics describe as a privacy risk. That does not make KYC unsafe by itself, but it does mean you should use only an official app, protect your account with 2FA and read the privacy policy. What if you skip Pi KYC?

You can still own PI. Without verification your app balance stays in the mining app, but you can buy PI on an exchange or on-ramp that is on Pi’s KYB list, and those platforms run their own KYC under their local rules. That is a different process from Pi’s own check and it applies to a different asset flow: PI you buy on an exchange sits at the exchange, and withdrawing it to a Pi Wallet still needs a mainnet wallet. The buying guide and wallet guide cover that route, and the mining page explains what you keep earning in the meantime.

A practical checklist

Before you submit, make sure your phone’s camera and OS are current, your document is undamaged and readable, your name matches across the app and the document, and you are on a stable connection. Afterward, keep your passphrase offline, keep 2FA tied to an email you control, and keep a little spare Pi if you are using Fast-Track, because of the gas-fee issue Pi described in September 2026. When your balance has migrated, the next steps are in the transfer guide.

Quick answers

Is there a Pi Coin KYC deadline?

The grace period began on 1 July 2024 and its deadline was extended several times, most recently to 14 March 2025. We found no single, current official cut-off date for new applicants as of October 2026. Check the latest posts at minepi.com/blog and ignore any site claiming a hard 'last date'.

Why is my Pi KYC stuck or pending?

Common causes are duplicate-account flags, failed liveness checks on older phones, and tentative approvals that needed extra checks. Pi's blog post of 17 September 2026 describes fixes for each. 'Pending' and 'slot not available' are community terms; Pi does not document a slot system.

Is Pi KYC safe?

KYC involves a selfie and ID document processed by AI and human validators, so your data is held centrally. Do it only in the official Pi app, never through a link, group or paid service. Critics raise data-privacy concerns, so read Pi's privacy policy before you submit.

How long does Pi KYC take?

Pi publishes no guaranteed turnaround. Each application is reviewed in roughly 20 validation tasks by AI and human validators, and delays depend on queue size and any flags. In December 2025 Pi said AI cut the validator queue by about 50 %.

Can I pay someone to speed up Pi KYC?

No. Pi's own safety guidance, relayed by its wiki, treats paid or unofficial KYC groups as scams, and verification happens only inside the app. Anyone offering a 'fast-track' for money, or asking for your passphrase, is trying to steal from you.
